Watch Oscar-nominated animated short film Sister

Directed by Chinese director, Siqi Song, Sister is a stop-motion animated short that marks her first nomination by the Academy. From One Child Nation to So Long, My Son, there have been a number of films released in recent years that ruminate on China's one-child policy and Song covers that same territory in 8 minutes. It was actually her graduation film while at CalArts Experimental Animation Programme and her third overall (the trailer for her latest, The Coin, is available to watch here). If you want to see how it was made, you can also check out this 3-minute YouTube video. You can watch Sister below by paying only £1.66 on Vimeo - a small price to pay to support an upcoming filmmaker.

A man remembers his childhood memories of growing up with an annoying little sister in 1990s China. How would his life have been if things had gone differently?

We need your help

Running a website like The Digital Fix - especially one with over 20 years of content and an active community - costs lots of money and we need your help. As advertising income for independent sites continues to contract we are looking at other ways of supporting the site hosting and paying for content.

You can help us by using the links on The Digital Fix to buy your films, games and music and we ask that you try to avoid blocking our ads if you can. You can also help directly for just a few pennies per day via our Patreon - and you can even pay to have ads removed from the site entirely.
