Watch David Lynch's new short film on Netflix today
You may or may not be aware that today is David Lynch's 74th birthday. As a gift to his loyal legion of fans, the legendary auteur has offered a new 17-minute short film called What Did Jack Do? which is available to watch on Netflix right now.
As you've come to expect from Lynch, this is a strange - but funny - offering based on a simple premise:
In a locked down train station, a homicide detective conducts an interview with a tormented monkey.
What Did Jack Do? features Lynch playing a detective interrogating a monkey called Jack (who is wearing a suit, of course) in a dark room with a plain set of tables of chairs. What the point is, we'll never know, but that has been the case with Lynch's work throughout his groundbreaking career.
Lynch actually made the short in 2016 and originally conceived the idea for it as far back as 2014. Ahead of the opening of a show called ‘naming’ at the Middlesbrough Institute of Modern Art which focused on his photography and art, he spoke to The Guardian and teased the project:
“Right now I’m mostly writing, I’ve got a painting going and I’m building a chair. I love to build things and this is for a monkey film. I’m working with a monkey named Jack and that’ll come out sometime. It is not a chimpanzee, the monkey came up from South America.“
The short was only previously shown once at a small public event in Paris at the Fondation Cartier pour l'Art Contemporain on November 8 2017 to a select group of friends and colleagues. He was in the city ahead of travelling to Rome to collect a Lifetime Achievement Award from director Paolo Sorrentino at the Festa del Cinema di Roma.
Emily Stofle (who featured in Twin Peaks season 3 and Inland Empire) also briefly appears in the short as waitress, although the important question we all want to know is, who is the monkey? The voice is credited to 'Jack Cruz', so it will likely remain a mystery for the foreseeable future (it’s most likely Lunch’s own).
It has been 14 years since Lynch directed a full-length fiction film, with the third season of Twin Peaks released in 2017 cherished by his fans eager for more of this work. During that same period he has continued to direct multiple short films, with his latest oddity classed by Netflix as a 'crime drama'. Go figure.
As always, What Did Jack Do? is a unique piece of work that demands to be watched more than once. You can head over to Netflix to check it out.
