U-Carmen in July

Tartan Video have announced the UK DVD release of U-Carmen for 24th July 2006 priced at £19.99. Set in a South African township, Bizet’s popular opera finds an exuberant new lease of life for one of the world’s great femme fatales. The ever sensual Carmen lives out her independent, carefree life in a tough world of gangsters. It’s also a cauldron of love, jealousy, desire and revenge.

Bizet’s Carmen is one of those internationally popular operas with universally adaptable themes of love and tragedy. British-born director Mark Dornford-May has used his theatrical experience to give the tale a vibrant new lease of life. Having created a new ensemble theatre company from the residents of eKhayelitsha, a township in Cape Town, he trained the actors to prepare for this screen adaptation. Performed in Xhosa, one of South Africa’s eleven official languages, it gives new life to a universal classic.
