The Whistlers trailer: A Palme d'Or nominated thriller giving off all the right signals

Romanian director, Corneliu Porumboiu, isn't best known for his thrillers. The Whistlers has a different tone to previous releases that have seen him build a name for himself on the European arthouse circuit, with the likes of Police, Adjective, The Treasure and Infinite Football all proving to be an acquired taste for many. Although, he has always had an eye for details, and judging by the trailer this isn't your normal crime thriller with Porumboiu injecting his own unique take on things. The overall premise may seem a bit silly, but this Palme d'Or nominated film has picked up good reviews up until this point, so it may just work. Watch the trailer for The Whistlers above.

Not everything is as it seems for Cristi, a police inspector in Bucharest who plays both sides of the law. Embarked by the beautiful Gilda on a high-stakes heist, both will have to navigate the twists and turns of treachery and deception. A secret whistling language spoken on the Spanish island of La Gomera might just be what they need to pull it off.

As usual, Porumboiu has written the script, with the cast featuring Vlad Ivanov, Catrinel Marlon, Agustí Villaronga, Cristóbal Pinto, Sergiu Costache and Antonio Buíl.

The Whistlers opens in US cinemas on February 20 before arriving in the UK on April 10, 2020.
