After Easy Rider, Peter Fonda had become the golden boy of new independent American cinema. It put him in a powerful position to make his directorial debut. He chose The Hired Hand, an elegiac Western written by Alan Sharp (Ulzana’s Raid; Rob Roy), which given its sumptuous look by Oscar-winning cinematographer Vilmos Zsigmond (The Deer Hunter and Close Encounters of the Third Kind). Its also edited by Frank Mazzola who worked on Demon Seed, Performance and Wildside.
Harry(Peter Fonda) a drifter who has spent years roaming the desert and staying one step ahead of trouble returns to the wife (Verna Bloom) and child he abandoned long ago. Visiting the local town, he and his best finds him and best mate Arch (Warren Oates) narrowly avoid a fight, but their actions lead to tragic consequences later, Fonda explores themes of loyalty, friendship, fidelity and love set against the stunning vista of the American West.

This restoration has been made possible with the co-operation of Film Four Channel and association with Pando Company Inc. Now rescued from near obscurity, The Hired Hand is set to be established as one of the classic revisionist Westerns alongside The Unforgiven and Dances With Wolves with Fonda recognised as an accomplished actor and director.
