The Grudge Red Band trailer: John Cho needs to wash evil spirits out of his hair

Horror remakes have been around almost as long as the genre itself, and 15 years on from the miserable remake of Takashi Shimizu's J-horror classic, The Grudge, we're about to get another. Perhaps the only saving grace on this occasion may be the director, Nicolas Pesce, who so far has made two unconventional horrors (although Piercing was less successful than his debut). The trailer has all the hallmarks of yet another jump scare-fest, so you may be best served just sticking with the original - which is genuinely a decent horror film. You can watch red band The Grudge trailer above.

A single mother and young detective, Muldoon, discovers that a suburban house is cursed by a vengeful ghost that dooms those who enter it with a violent death. Now, she runs to save herself and her son from demonic spirits from the cursed house in her neighbourhood.

Pesce also wrote the screenplay, with the cast starring Andrea Riseborough, Demián Bichir, John Cho, Betty Gilpin, Lin Shaye and Jacki Weaver.

The Grudge opens in US cinemas on January 3 and in the UK January 31.
