The Green Knight trailer: David Lowery leads Dev Patel back to the 14th century

David Lowery has an affection for delving into old stories, myths and legends. Ain't Them Bodies Saints was a lyrical crime drama revelling in outlaw mythology, Pete's Dragon was about, well, a dragon, A Ghost Story leapt across time and space and The Old Man & The Gun celebrated the legend of an old bank robber while reflecting on Robert Redford's storied career. As you can tell by the title, The Green Knight follows on in that tradition, retelling the tale of Sir Gawain and the Green Knight. It's being pitched as a fantasy adventure by A24, although there is a real sense of horror to the trailer, as they hope to maintain momentum of the past few years with a few more indie successes in 2020. Watch the first trailer for The Green Knight above.

An epic fantasy adventure based on the timeless Arthurian legend, The Green Knight tells the story of Sir Gawain, King Arthur’s reckless and headstrong nephew, who embarks on a daring quest to confront the eponymous Green Knight, a gigantic emerald-skinned stranger and tester of men.

Lowery writes and directs, with Dev Patel, Alicia Vikander, Joel Edgerton Sarita Choudhury, Sean Harris, Kate Dickie, Barry Keoghan and Ralph Ineson all in the cast.

The Green Knight opens in US cinemas on May 29, with a UK date still to be announced.
