From the PR:

Warner Music Vision are pleased to announce the 26 January 2004 release of The Flaming Lips' critically acclaimed album Yoshimi Battles The Pink Robots for the first time in 5.1 Surround Sound on DVD-Audio. This unique, feature-filled audio visual extravaganza is jam-packed with supplementary features including 10 video extras, 6 Audio tracks not found on the original CD version of the album, and Frequency Waveform Cartoons, a psychedelic computer triggered visual companion to the entire album.
Mixed in 5.1 Surround Sound by the band and Grammy award winning recording engineer, Elliot Scheiner, whose previous DVD-A album credits include Queen's A Night At The Opera and Steely Dan's Everything Must Go.

The DVD-Audio version of Yoshimi boasts outstanding Advanced Resolution Multi-Channel Surround Sound, and includes two audio soundtracks to choose from - Dolby 5.1 Surround Sound and Dolby 2.0 Stereo.

The Flaming Lips, one of the most critically acclaimed and consistently innovative groups in modern music are a hot, high profile item thanks to several new developments on a variety of creative fronts. Although the band had been around 19 glorious years, they finally came to worldwide attention when they received a 2002 Grammy® Nomination in the Best Rock Instrumental Performance category for Approaching Pavonis Mons By Balloon (Utopia Plantia) a key track from their current Warner Bros. Records release, Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots.

The track Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots, Pt.1 tore up the UK singles chart and entered into the Top 20. The Oklahoma-bred quartet made headline news when they embarked on a UK tour to promote the album, which included an appearance on the legendary BBC TV music showcase on the prestigious Top Of The Pops. Sharing the bill was teen heartthrob Justin Timberlake, who immediately hit it off with the group and was subsequently invited to play bass guitar with them on the show.

Yoshimi Battles The Pink Robots 5.1 includes the most supplementary features ever committed to the format, and shows the true benefits that this exciting new format has to offer. The Flaming Lips are the perfect contemporary rock band to embrace this progressive audio visual format and utilize visual material to enhance the 5.1 audio mixes of the original album tracks, all of which adds a new experience to album enjoyment.

The video extras include an impressive roster video promos of the three singles taken from the three singles taken from the album, Do You Realize??, Yoshimi Battles The Pink Robots Pt. 1, and their most recent single, Fight Test. What makes these extras unique is that every promo video is backed up with a "Making of" documentary video about how each promo video was made. Also included in the video extras is the movie trailer for The Flaming Lips' Christmas On Mars, a futuristic and bizarre taster for the band's full length movie (Coming Xmas 2003!).

What really sets this DVD-A apart from the rest is the inclusion of The Making of the Yoshimi DVD-A which is included within the video extras mode. This is the first time consumers will be able to watch a cutting-edge recording artist being filmed, as he (Lips head honcho Wayne Coyne) talks about what 5.1 Surround Sound is and how it works.

The video clip extras on the DVD-Audio album are as follows:

1. Do You Realize?? (Original Mark Pellington edit)
2. Do You Realize?? (Alternative edit)
3. The Making of Do You Realize?? Video
4. Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots Pt. 1
5. The Making of the Yoshimi video#
6. Fight Test (video)
7. Phoebe Battles The Pink Robots (video)
8. Christmas on Mars (Coming Xmas 2003 Movie Trailer)
9. The Making of the Yoshimi DVD-A
10. Are you A Hypnotist?? (George's Photogentic Simulation Theory #1134)

The fastest selling album in the group's history, Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots has become an over-the-top critical favourite, landing on over 100 (and counting) year-end "Best Of" lists in the U.S., U.K., Europe and Japan. The first single taken from the album, Do You Realize?? picked up momentum on radio, with airplay on KROQ in Los Angeles, KNDD in Seattle, Chicago's WXRT, Boston's WXRV and other trend setting stations coast to coast. Meanwhile, in the UK, Yoshimi was voted Album of the Year by Uncut magazine, and subsequently received the thumbs up from Mojo, Q and Classic Rock magazine.

In addition to the DVD-A video supplementary material (video extras) mentioned above, the album also boasts 6 rare audio track extras which never appeared on the original CD version of the album, and are exclusive to the DVD-A.

These include the following songs:

1. Up Above The Daily Hum
2. Yoshimi Battles The Pink Robots Pt. 1 (Japanese Version)
3. If I Go Mad (Funeral In My Head)
4. Do You Realize?? (Floating In Space Remix - Edit)
5. Yoshimi Battles The Pink Robots Pt. 1 (Rol Sessions)
6. Do You Realize?? (CD 101 Version)

The final unique feature in the supplementary material section on the disc is entitled Frequency Waveform Cartoons. Simply put, what you get are psychedelic computerised images that are synced to each track from the album. In effect, when you play the album in this mode, every track will be accompanied with abstract waveform images that will move in time to the beat of each song and to the instruments within. The basic idea here is to have the album running, while the TV is turned on, and have background ambient visuals moving in time to the music.

The Flaming Lips will be undertaking a European Tour in October and November, which kicks off in the UK on 23 October at the Plymouth Pavilion, and ends at Edinburgh Usher Hall on 9 November 2003. The London Hammersmith Apollo concert on 3 November is already sold out.

If you are a fan of the original Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots, then you can't go without experience the 5.1 Surround Sound audio mix and extras on the groundbreaking DVD-Audio album Yoshimi Battles The Pink Robots 5.1.
