The Farewell trailer: Awkwafina’s long distance journey brings her closer to home
After making its debut at Sundance in Utah at the start of the year, Lulu Wang’s new comedy, The Farewell, picked up flawless reviews from the critics. It stars Awkwafina in the lead role - the rapper-actress whose status continues to grow after breakthrough appearances in Crazy Rich Asians and Ocean’s 8 last year (there’s no real news on Ocean’s 9 yet but it certainly did enough at the box office to nail down a sequel). As we mentioned a few weeks ago, The Farewell will also be playing at Sundance London at the end of the month, which we’ll be covering. Check out the trailer above which A24 have just dropped.
Chinese-born, U.S.-raised Billi (Awkwafina) reluctantly returns to Changchun to find that, although the whole family knows their beloved matriarch, Nai-Nai, has been given mere weeks to live, everyone has decided not to tell Nai Nai herself. To assure her happiness, they gather under the joyful guise of an expedited wedding, uniting family members scattered among new homes abroad. As Billi navigates a minefield of family expectations and proprieties, she finds there’s a lot to celebrate: a chance to rediscover the country she left as a child, her grandmother’s wondrous spirit, and the ties that keep on binding even when so much goes unspoken.
Lulu Wang (Posthumous) writes and directs, with Tzi Ma, Diana Lin, Zhao Shuzhen, Lu Hong, Jiang Yongbo, Chen Han, Aoi Mizuhara, Chen Hanwei all supporting Awkwafina.
The Farewell opens in US cinemas on 12th July, with no news yet on a UK date.
