The Death and Life of John F. Donovan trailer: Xavier Dolan returns with a tale of a young boy inspired by celebrity

For quite a while it seemed as if Xavier Dolan could do no wrong. The 29-year-old writer-actor-director created a string of critically acclaimed hits that has seen him win more than one award at Cannes. Films like Laurence Anwyays, Tom at the Farm and Mommy maintained his high standard, until 2016's messy It's Only the End of the World saw him hit something of brick wall. Many had hoped The Death and Life of John F. Donovan would put him back on track, but the critical response so far has been savage, to say the least (Jessica Chastain was cut from the film and may now be thanking her lucky stars). The first trailer for The Death and Life of John F. Donovan has just been released and you can check it out above now.

A decade after the death of an American TV star, a young actor reminisces the written correspondence he shared with him, as well as the impact those letters had on both their lives.

Dolan directs and has co-written the script with Jacob Tierney, with Natalie Portman, Sarah Gadon, Kit Harington, Emily Hampshire, Thandie Newton, Jared Keeso, Susan Sarandon, Michael Gambon and Kathy Bates all starring.

The Death and Life of John F. Donovan hits French cinemas in mid-March, with no news yet on a UK release date.
