TAG Launch Multi-Thousand Pound Player
Another day, another mouth-watering press release arrives from TAG McLaren Audio tempting me with equipment I could never possibly afford. This time, it's a £3995 DVD player.
The DVD32R is a player designed to meet and exceed the rigorous THX Ultra standards and to also achieve reference standard CD playback. Built and researched from scratch by TAG, the unit avoids using OEM components such as the ones used by 90% of DVD manufacturers.
Here's a bit of a lowdown:
The DVD32R is one of the very few DVD players available to use a top loading transport. This allows a substantially more stable laser and therefore reduces jitter.
Adaptive Drawer Mechanism
Of the few top-loading DVD players available, the vast majority have manual open and close operation. The DVD32R has a fully automatic drawer which can adapt over time resulting in perfect and consistent performance regardless of temperature or age.
When the drawer opens, an array of very sexy looking LEDs lights up to allow easier disc changing in the dark.
Top Quality MPEG Decoder
Working closely with Mediamatics, TAG settled on the Pantera-DVD chip, the first to offer all back-end functions of a DVD player on a single chip.
High Quality On-screen Display
Even the OSD on this DVD player is unrivaled. Using both vertical and anti-flicker filters, the OSD is a full resolution beauty (allegedly).
Test Pattern Generator
To allow you to tune your display equipment to the highest standard, the machine includes both software and hardware driven tests.
TAGtronic T²L Link
When used in conjunction with the equally expensive AV32R (see details here), the TAGtronicSynch Link T²L produces a higher quality, cleaner and more controlled sound.
TAGtronic Communication Bus
Using this, the DVD32R can be integrated with your other TAG equipment. This allows remote control codes to be transferred from unit to unit allowing components to be hidden away.
Phew, well that's just an overview of some of the features, but the DVD32R, in the tradition of most TAG equipment also allows you to upgrade in the future should any new developments occur. All of the software for the player is kept in flash memory meaning that any upgrades are easily applied.
The internal hardware of the machine is also easily upgradeable, allowing the addition of features such as DVD-Audio, Progressive Scan and even a Digital Video Output without the need for a complete new player.
And that's it, if you've got four grand lying around (and lets face it, who hasn't?) why not treat yourself to a rather lovely TAG DVD32R, the missus won't mind, honest.
