Star Wars: Bob Iger confirms that the next film - in 2022 - will be from the Game of Thrones showrunners

Disney recently announced their schedule for the next few years and it confirmed that Star Wars would be taking a three year break with new films scheduled to appear in December 2022, 2024 and 2026. In between these films would be the four Avatar sequels which would appear in 2021, 2023, 2025 and 2027.

Now, Disney company chairman Bob Iger has confirmed that the 2022 film will kick off the D.B.Weiss and David Benioff trilogy.

“We did a deal with David Benioff and D.B Weiss, who are famous for Game of Thrones, and the next movie that we release will be theirs,” Iger said. “And we’re not saying anything more about that.”

We need not worry about a lack of Star Wars content though - while the films disappear once The Rise of Skywalker is released, we will have both The Mandalorian AND the Cassian Andor show that are launching on Disney+ to keep our live action Star Wars needs sated alongside the continuing Star Wars Resistance animation on Disney XD.

Iger continued “[We thought] it would be smart for us to take a bit of a hiatus while we figure out what’s next. Now, we’re not going to wait until The Rise of Skywalker is released and start figuring it out, we’re actually hard at work doing that already. The conclusion that we reached was that three years was the proper amount of time to not only take a breather and reset, but to really gear up for the next film’s release.”
