Slaughterhouse Five in August
Univeral Pictures Video have announced the UK Region 2 DVD release of Slaughterhouse Five for 8th August 2005 priced at £19.99. Kurt Vonnegut, Jr’s SLAUGHTERHOUSE FIVE, one of the greatest novels of the 20th century is brought to life in a masterful screen adaptation available on DVD for the first time in the U.K. This unique War/Sci-Fi feature will be available to buy from 8th August in a bespoke box set, which also contains a copy of Vonnegut’s groundbreaking novel.
Directed by Academy Award® and BAFTA winner George Roy Hill (Butch Cassidy And The Sundance Kid/The World According To Garp/The Sting), Slaughterhouse Five won him the prestigious Jury Prize at the 1972 Cannes Film Festival. This adaptation is complete with stylish performances, powerful re-creations of doomed Dresden and the suburban tedium of post war America to which WW2 survivors returned.
Capturing the surreal and often brutal pathos of Vonnegut’s masterpiece, Michael Sacks (Sugarland Express/The Amityville Horror/Hanover Street) received a Golden Globe nomination for his understated portrayal of Billy Pilgrim - the anti-hero who finds himself “unstuck in time”. Aging from 18 to 80 Sachs convinces completely with a numbing resignation to his displacement, Billy swings randomly between his experiences in a Nazi POW camp, the annihilation of Dresden, his future life as an exhibit on Planet Trafamadore with a Hollywood starlet (Valerie Perrine - What Women Want/Superman I and II), his saccharine nuptials, his birth and even his death. The only constant being the flash backs to the horrors of war and the obsessive pursuit of POW survivor Paul Lazzoro played by Ron Leibman (Garden State/Your Three Minutes Are Up) who blames Billy for the death of his friend.
An anti-war film without piousness and a witty sci-fi adventure rooted in tragic realism, like Vonnegut’s cult book, SLAUGHTERHOUSE FIVE is a unique experience; both are now available to buy together in this limited edition DVD set.
