Sicilian Ghost Story trailer: Magic realism meets the Mafia
Having played at Cannes as far back as May 2017, it's been a long wait for Sicilian Ghost Story to make its way off the festival trail and into cinemas. There has been universal praise for a film that has been likened to the work of Guillermo del Toro by some critics - although that shouldn't be the only standard bearer for films of this kind. It was released in Italy at the same it showed debuted in Cannes, and a UK release date has finally be nailed down. Watch the trailer for Sicilian Ghost Story above to find out more.
Giuseppe is the 13-year-old son of a Mafia hitman, turned informant. When he disappears, it is assumed he has been kidnapped by his father's former bosses. Giuseppe's girlfriend, the determined Luna, battles her mother (some kind of wicked witch) and the police authority's sloth and corruption in her search for him. Cleverly plotting her relentless quest, while her imagination conjures up mysterious and magical visions of where Giuseppe might be, the film contrasts these fantastical worlds with the grim reality of the boy's cruel captivity.
Fabio Grassadonia and Antonio Piazza (Salvo) write and direct, with the cast featuring Julia Jedlikowska, Gaetano Fernandez, Corinne Musallari and Andrea Falzone.
Sicilian Ghost Story arrives in UK cinemas on August 3rd 2018.
