Shoplifters trailer: Kore-eda’s biggest ever domestic film is coming soon to the UK
Perhaps one of the most surprising omissions from this year's London Film Festival is Hirokazu Kore-eda's Shoplifters. It debuted at Cannes (and picked up the Palme d'Or to boot) and has played at a string of festivals including Telluride, TIFF and the New York Film Festival today. After opening in Japan in June this year it went on to generate $40 million, making it the director's biggest ever box office hit in his home country. The good news is Kore-eda fans will not have to wait long as the film will get a full UK release next month. In the meantime you can watch the trailer for Shoplifters above.
After one of their shoplifting sessions, Osamu and his son come across a little girl in the freezing cold. At first reluctant to shelter the girl, Osamu’s wife agrees to take care of her after learning of the hardships she faces. Although the family is poor, barely making enough money to survive through petty crime, they seem to live happily together until an unforeseen incident reveals hidden secrets, testing the bonds that unite them.
Kore-eda wrote the script as usual and the cast features Lily Franky, Sakura Ando, Kengo Kora, Sosuke Ikematsu, Chizuru Ikewaki, Yuki Yamada, Yoko Moriguchi, and Akira Emoto.
Shoplifters opens in the UK on November 23rd 2018.
