Shoplifters trailer: Hirokazu Kore-eda's Palme d'Or winner keeps it in the family

As always, the prizes handed out at Cannes this year went against most people's expectations and Hirokazu Kore-eda's Shoplifters picking up the coveted Palme d'Or prize was probably the biggest surprise of all. The characters in his latest family drama seem a little more rough around the edges than normal but as usual the reviews have been consistent in their praise and the Japanese filmmaker's work is always a must see once they finally arrive in the UK. Take a look at the trailer for Shoplifters above to get a first look at the film.

After one of their shoplifting sessions, Osamu and his son come across a little girl in the freezing cold. At first reluctant to shelter the girl, Osamu’s wife agrees to take care of her after learning of the hardships she faces. Although the family is poor, barely making enough money to survive through petty crime, they seem to live happily together until an unforeseen incident reveals hidden secrets, testing the bonds that unite them…

As always Kore-eda penned the script and the cast features Lily Franky, Sakura Ando, Kengo Kora, Sosuke Ikematsu, Chizuru Ikewaki, Yuki Yamada, Yoko Moriguchi, and Akira Emoto.

Shoplifters gets a Japanese release in early June and at a guess we are probably looking at an early 2019 date for the UK. Magnolia picked up distribution for North America but no dates have been set at this stage.
