Shadow trailer: Hero director Zhang Yimou retells an epic Chinese story

When you’ve made stunning martial arts films like House of Flying Daggers and Hero (and the beautifully composed drama Raise the Red Lantern), you can be forgiven for turning out the odd stinker like The Great Wall. Zhang Yimou’s Shadow is a retelling of the Three Kingdoms story that recalls a period when China was split between the Wei, Shu, and Wu states. It has the epic feel we’ve come to expect from the Chinese director and the trailer is a real feast for the eyes. Take a look for yourself above by hitting play and watching the trailer for Shadow.

In a kingdom ruled by a young and unpredictable king, the military commander has a secret weapon: a “shadow”, a look-alike who can fool both his enemies and the King himself. Now he must use this weapon in an intricate plan that will lead his people to victory in a war that the King does not want.

Deng Chao takes the lead role, with Sun Li, Zheng Kai, Wang Qianyuan, Wang Jingchun, Hu Jun, Guan Xiaotong, and Wu Leo also featuring.

Shadow gets a May release in the US and we’re not sure whether it will arrive in the UK, but we’ll keep you updated as and when.
