Searching trailer: John Cho stars in an online tech thriller

The idea of setting a film inside the frame of computer screen makes a lot of sense in the modern age, although previous attempts such as Nacho Vigalondo's Open Windows and Levan Gabriadze's Unfriended produced mixed results. Director Timur Bekmambetov's Profile debuted at this years Sundance and another, Searching, left the festival with rave reviews. It seems like there may be life in the sub-genre yet. The first trailer for Searching came online yesterday and you can check out above right now.

After David Kim (John Cho)’s 16-year-old daughter goes missing, a local investigation is opened and a detective is assigned to the case. But 37 hours later and without a single lead, David decides to search the one place no one has looked yet, where all secrets are kept today: his daughter’s laptop. In a hyper-modern thriller told via the technology devices we use every day to communicate, David must trace his daughter’s digital footprints before she disappears forever.

Aneesh Chaganty writes and directs his first film, with Debra Messing, Joseph Lee, Michelle La and Sara Sohn also featuring in the cast.

Searching will appear in UK cinemas on August 31st 2018.
