Scorsese producing Joker origins film

News we probably didn't expect to hear today is that Martin Scorsese is due to produce what has been billed as “A gritty and grounded hard-boiled crime film set in early-80s Gotham City that isn’t meant to feel like a DC movie as much as one of Scorsese’s films from that era, like Taxi Driver, Raging Bull or The King Of Comedy,” according to Deadline’s Mike Fleming Jr.

Todd Phillips, director of The Hangover movies, is due to be the man behind the camera, while Scott Silver (8 Mile) is on scriptwriting duty. This is all going to be part of another strain of superhero movies that will remain separate from the main DC universe. Which means Jared Leto will continue in his role as the grinning maniac in the Suicide Squad sequel, while this new Joker film will go back to life before he took a bath in a chemical vat.

The success of Deadpool and Logan has shown there is an appetite for these films and of course a whole lot of money to be made. Who is going to step into the wacky shoes of The Joker remains to be seen. The shadow of Heath Ledger continues to loom large and perhaps going back to the start of the story will enable the character to find new cinematic life.

The project is still in the very early stages of development, so no indication has been given on when this might be coming to cinemas, but we'll keep you posted with more information when we have it.
