River Phoenix to make a Posthumous Return in DARK BLOOD

Lionsgate has acquired the distribution rights for George Sluizer’s Dark Blood, known for being the last film that River Phoenix shot before his untimely death in October 1993.

The film stars Phoenix as a widower named Boy, who runs away to the desert after his wife passes away from radiation poisoning, following nuclear tests nearby. When newlyweds Harry and Buffy (Jonathan Pryce and Judy Davis) unwittingly encroach on his land, he imprisons them and attempts to start a new beginning for himself with Buffy.

Shot in Torrey, Utah, Dark Blood was approximately 70% finished, with only interior shots left to be completed prior to Phoenix’s death. Insurance difficulties forced the production to cease but Sluizer held on to his footage and began piecing it together, filling in the gaps with newly-written dialogue, which he narrates himself throughout.

Dark Blood has had a few showings on the festival circuit during the past couple of years, generating mixed reactions in the process. Judging the trailer, it does appear to be a curious looking piece of work.
