R1 Ultimate Superman Collection - Words of Caution

Over the weekend various internet forums (including The DVD Forums thread here) started filling up with posts warning of problems with Warner’s Region 1 Ultimate Superman Collection which officially streets tomorrow, 28th November. At first the problems were hoped to be intermittent, but it now appears that every set suffers from the following replication errors:

  • Disc 1 of Superman: The Movie does not feature the advertised 1978 version original DD2.0 audio, but instead uses an edited DD2.0 downmix of the 5.1 remix found on the 2000 expanded version of the movie. This also affects the standalone Superman: The Movie DVD release and presumably the version included with the Christopher Reeve Superman Collection.

  • The disc holding Superman III is not the new Deluxe Edition, but instead the old barebones movie-only release (though the artwork on the disc is that of the Deluxe Edition). This only affects the Ultimate Collection.

USA based website The Digital Bits have been in contact with Warner over these issues and have now posted an official statement from the studio explaining the unfortunate situation and their plans to rectify the problem. The statement follows...

"Bonus content was omitted from the Superman III Deluxe Edition in the 14-disc Superman Ultimate Collector's Edition. Furthermore, disc one of Superman: The Movie Four Disc Special Edition did not include the Dolby Digital 2.0 mix. Neither disc is known to be physically defective in any way.

Warner Home Video wants to extend apologies to all of our loyal Superman fans who've waited so patiently for these great collections and has taken immediate steps to correct these errors with the intention of standing behind our product 100%.

Replacement discs can be obtained by calling: 800-553-6937. The exchange program applies only to purchases of the Superman III Deluxe Edition in the Superman Ultimate Collector's Edition and to disc one of Superman: The Movie Four Disc Special Edition, available as a single title, as well as in The Christopher Reeve Superman Collection and in the Superman Ultimate Collector's Edition."

Based on this statement it seems highly unlikely that the replacement procedure will cover those of you who might have imported the set. You will most likely have to rely upon your retailer of choice to handle any replacements/returns so if you’ve not yet ordered, it may be best to wait and see how things pan out or to simply make sure you choose a retailer you are confident will help you acquire the corrected discs.
