Planet of the Apes

This one's a bit of a late announcement on the part of Fox. A press release has just dropped through the door revealing the release date for the Region 2 release of the original Planet of the Apes and a boxset of the original series of films.

First up, Planet of the Apes will be released on 8 October retailing for £15.99. The film that kickstarted the long running saga of Man against Ape has recently spawned a remake, but the original is still by far and away the best. Starring Charlton Heston as the Earthman who crashes on a strange world ruled by apes, Planet of the Apes quite rightly has received a lot of praise since its release and went on to spawn four sequels and a two-season TV series. The DVD will feature a 2.35:1 anamorphic transfer and Dolby Digital 5.1 sound along with a photo gallery, and the original theatrical trailers.

On the same day we can expect to see a six-disc boxset featuring the first film, it's four sequels - Beneath Planet of the Apes, Escape from Planet of the Apes, Conquest of the Planet of the Apes and Battle for Planet of the Apes, and a sixth disc featuring an excellent two-hour documentary: 'Behind Planet of the Apes. The box set will retail for £49.99. Each disc will feature anamorphic 2.35:1 transfers (apart from the documentary which is 4:3) and Dolby Digital 2.0 sound (with the exception of the first film which as DD5.1). We can also expect to see the original theatrical trailers on each disc along with a very light sprinkling of other extras such as cast biographies and photo galleries.
