Weathering With You trailer: The official English trailer of the new film from the director of Your Name

2016's Your Name. wasn't the first film by Makoto Shinkai but it was the one that put him firmly on the map, as well as becoming one of the most successful films in Japanese history. Weathering With You (Tenki no Ko) is Shinkai's sixth film, but unlike Your Name., The Garden of Words and 5 Centimeters per Second it isn't an adaptation of one of his own novels. The film made its premiere at TIFF and has also been entered into the international section for next year's Oscars, and this English-subtitled Weathering With You trailer gives you a complete look at what's to come.

The summer of his high school freshman year, Hodaka runs away from his remote island home to Tokyo, and quickly finds himself pushed to his financial and personal limits. The weather is unusually gloomy and rainy every day, as if to suggest his future. He lives his days in isolation, but finally finds work as a writer for a mysterious occult magazine. Then one day, Hodaka meets Hina on a busy street corner. This bright and strong-willed girl possesses a strange and wonderful ability: the power to stop the rain and clear the sky…

Shinkai also wrote the script and the voice cast includes Kotaro Daigo and Nana Mori as the voices of Morishima Hodaka and Amano Hina respectively.

Weathering With You opens in UK and US cinemas on January 17, 2020
