New Mowgli: Legend of the Jungle trailer: New look at Andy Serkis' live action adaptation of The Jungle Book

There were long delays for Andy Serkis' latest take on the Jungle Book and a trailer for the film finally appeared in May this year. Then Netflix jumped in to buy Mowgli a month or two later from Warner Bros. and it is now being prepared for a release on their platform. Perhaps Serkis saying the film was much "darker" didn't inspire much confidence it would recoup its money. It will also follow Netflix's recent model of hitting select cinemas before getting a worldwide digital release.

It follows on from on Favreau’s largely CG effort in 2016, so there is a danger that audiences won't exactly be pumped to see another take on Rudyard Kipling's classic, although there are no singing and dancing animals according to Serkis. See if the new Netflix trailer for Mowgli can get you excited by checking it out above right now.

The story follows the upbringing of the human child Mowgli, raised by a wolf pack in the jungles of India. As he learns the often harsh rules of the jungle, under the tutelage of a bear named Baloo and a panther named Bagheera, Mowgli becomes accepted by the animals of the jungle as one of their own. All but one: the fearsome tiger Shere Khan. But there may be greater dangers lurking in the jungle, as Mowgli comes face to face with his human origins.

If there's a danger of audience excitement levels being low, maybe the impressive cast Serkis has pulled together will do the trick, with young Rohan Chand as Mowgli, Christian Bale as Bagheera the panther, Cate Blanchett as Kaa the snake, Benedict Cumberbatch as Shere Khan the tiger, Naomie Harris as Nisha the female wolf, and Serkis himself as Baloo the bear. Matthew Rhys, Freida Pinto, Peter Mullan, Jack Reynor, Eddie Marsan, and Tom Hollander also feature.

Mowgli swings into select UK cinemas on November 29th and opens on Netflix on December 7th 2018.
