Martin Eden trailer: A TIFF and Venice-award winner coming to the UK next year
Pietro Marcello's Martin Eden has been quietly going about its business garnering mostly good reviews and some notable awards. Based on Jack London's classic 1909 book of the same name, it competed in official competition at Venice and TIFF, with Luca Marinelli collecting the best actor gong at the former, and the drama picking up the Platform Award at the latter. It also played at NYFF and is set to play at the London Film Festival over the next week. Where London's novel took place in California, Marcello has moved the story of a young ambitious sailor-come-writer across to Naples, Italy. Take a look at the trailer for Martin Eden above.
Martin Eden is set in a provocatively unspecified moment in Italy’s history yet was adapted from a 1909 novel by American author Jack London. Martin is a dissatisfied prole with artistic aspirations who hopes that his dreams of becoming a writer will help him rise above his station and marry a wealthy young university student. The twinned dissatisfactions of working-class toil and bourgeois success lead to political reawakening and destructive anxiety.
Marinelli leads the cast, with support from Jessica Cressy and Vincenzo Nemolato.
Martin Eden opened in Italy last month and plays at the London Film Festival. New Wave will be distributing the film in the UK at some point next year.
