Margot Robbie’s Birds of Prey appears to have been given a new name
What’s in a name? Quite a bit according to Warner Bros. who in an attempt to ramp up box office numbers for Birds of Prey have rejigged the title.
Where Margot Robbie’s spin-off was once ridiculously called Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn), it is now being marketed as Harley Quinn: Birds of Prey.
The name has changed on some major American ticket sellers, although Warner Bros. has yet to make any official comment. At the time of writing, the original name still exists on the major UK cinema websites, although listings tend to be updated on the Tuesday of each week. Whether it will inject more interest from movie goers remains to be seen.
That said, HQBoP is hardly a flop at this stage. A change in marketing may move the needle in the right direction and while the film will probably do well enough to wash its face and turn over a decent profit, it may fall short of the numbers hoped for by Warner Bros.
HQBoP had a huge amount of goodwill behind it (from most places online) but what connects in the real world does not always correlate with digital fan culture. There is an obsession with financial figures (and a general lack of understanding about what is and what isn’t a commercial success) and that means perception is more important than ever.
In our review of the film ahead of release last week Alex Dewing said: “Unapologetically violent, BoP sports some of the most exhilarating set pieces of any superhero film. Ingenious uses of non-lethal glitter guns, carnival fun-houses, and baseball bat choreography (which was good enough to even receive applause) keep you on the edge of your seat as you really have no idea what these women could do next, but you simply can’t wait to find out.”
If changing the name to Harley Quinn: Birds of Prey helps to turn momentum around for the film, then Warner Bros. may end up kicking themselves that it took a disappointing opening to jolt them into action.
