With Silence of the Lambs and Hannibal set to appear on Region 2 DVD shortly, we were waiting for Momentum to make the obvious announcement that the first film in the trilogy was in the works - and now they have.

Considered by many as the best of the three (and overlooked by many more), Manhunter sees the start of Hannibal 'Lecktor's' reign of terror. In a much more sinister performance than Anthony Hopkins in the latter films, Brian Cox stars as the human flesh-eater to whom policeman Will Graham (William Petersen) turns for assistance in the search for a psychopath known as The Tooth Fairy.

Directed by Michael Mann (The Insider, Heat), Manhunter should be considered as a must-watch for fans of the later films. It's easily as disturbing as both sequels - possibly even more so. The DVD release is set for 1 October, we can expect a 2.35:1 transfer, Dolby Stereo sound, an exclusive companion book, two postcards, a photo gallery and the trailer. Retail price: £19.99.

If you haven't already done so, I recommend checking out our review of the excellent 2-disc Region 0 Anchor Bay release before making any decisions whether to go for the Region 2 disc.
