Manderlay in July

Metrodome have announced the UK DVD release of Manderlay for 3rd July 2006 priced at £19.99. The second installment in Lars von Trier's allegorical 'USA' trilogy employs a similarly stripped down approach to Dogville and shares the earlier film's polemic stance, but to leaner and more accessible effect. Manderlay's scrutiny of the history of slavery and race relations begins in 1933.

Grace (Bryce Dallas Howard) and her father (Willem Dafoe) having fled Dogville, arrive in Alabama at the gate of a troubled plantation where the abolition of slavery 70 years earlier has been ignored. Disregarding her father's advice, Grace determines to right this injustice, and stays behind to liberate Manderlay. But in Von Trier's world the road to hell is paved with naïve good intentions, and Grace's determination to bring democracy and equality doesn't allow for the free will the former slaves might choose to exercise, nor for her own uncomfortable erotic fantasies…

Extras include:

  • Feature commentary with director Lars Von Trier and Director of Photography Anthony Dodd Mantle
  • 40 minute making of featurette 'The Road to Manderlay'
  • Trailer

Manderlay will also be released as a double-pack with Dogville, priced at £24.99. Extras on Dogville include two featurettes (Confessions Box and Trier, Kidman & Cannes) and the UK Trailer.
