Little Women trailer: See how Greta Gerwig and her star-studded cast have remade a timeless classic

With Greta Gerwig directing, and a cast including Meryl Streep, Saoirse Ronan, Laura Dern, Florence Pugh, Emma Watson and Timothée Chalamet, it's pretty safe to say the remake of Little Women is going be everywhere during award season. This is the eighth film adaptation of Louisa May Alcott's beloved novels (which were originally published in two volumes), and it has also been brought to radio, stage, TV and opera houses countless times since the books were published over 150 years ago. There is still debate as to which of the 1933, 1949 or 1994 film versions are best (the 2017 BBC TV mini-series was also much loved) so Gerwig and her cast have a big legacy to live up to. Watch the first trailer for Little Women above to get a first look.

Following the lives of four sisters, Amy, Jo, Beth and Meg, as they come of age in America in the aftermath of the Civil War. Though all very different from each other, the March sisters stand by each other through difficult and changing times.

Along with the heavy-hitters mentioned above, the rest of the cast includes Bob Odenkirk, James Norton, Eliza Scanlen, Abby Quinn and Chris Cooper.

Little Women opens in US cinemas on December 25 and in the UK a day later on December 26.
