Little Monsters director Abe Forsythe signs on for RoboCop Returns
Since the start of 2018 we’ve known that the original RoboCop writer Ed Neumeier was planing a direct sequel to Paul Verhoeven’s 1987 original. The Hollywood Reporter (THR) revealed last night that Little Monsters director Abe Forsythe is set to helm Robocop Returns, with Neumeier and co-creator Michael Milner producing.
It ends a few months of speculation after District 9 (a film that earned him a lot of mileage) director Neill Blomkamp announced back in August he was no longer going to be serving as director.
Since the 1987 film there have been three more films, including the forgettable 2014 remake starring Joel Kinnaman and Gary Oldman (Neumeier was on the writing team for that).
Given the recent box office flops of existing IPs like Terminator, Men in Black, Charlie’s Angels and Doctor Sleep, it’s surprising to see MGM and Orion eager to push forward with this project. Unless they can pull in a star-studded cast or convince a younger crowd this is a franchise worth caring about anymore, or are willing to try something completely different, you can only hope they have their expectations in order when it comes to release time.
