Les Misérables trailer: Take a look at Ladj Ly’s politically charged Cannes Jury Prize winner

There’s no shortage of adaptations of Victor Hugo’s classic novel, Les Misérables, although this year’s Grand Jury prize winner at Cannes gives it a modern day twist. Taking inspiration from the 2005 riots in Paris, French-Malian director Ladj Ly expanded on his 2011 short of the same name to make his first feature-length. Ly’s film also beat out the likes of Portrait of a Lady on Fire to become France’s submission for the International section at next year’s Oscars. Watch the trailer for Les Misérables to get a first look.

Stéphane, has recently joined the Anti-Crime squad in Montfermeil, a sensitive district of the Paris projects. Paired up with Chris and Gwada, whose methods are sometimes unorthodox, he rapidly discovers the tensions between the various neighborhood groups. When the trio finds themselves overrun during the course of an arrest, a drone begins filming every move they make.

Ly also wrote the script, with the cast featuring Damien Bonnard, Alexis Manenti, and Djibril Zonga.

Amazon Studios will release Les Misérables on January 10, 2020 in the US, and we’re not sure when it will arrive in the UK.
