Lando Calrissian may get his OWN Star Wars spin-off
Donald Glover's portrayal of Lando Calrissian appears to have given LucasFilm ideas for the future and it seems that he may be set to get his OWN spin-off adventure according a possibly mis-translated quote attributed to Kathleen Kennedy!
With Solo: A Star Wars Story set for theatrical release next week amid mostly positive reviews from critics, many have highlighted Glover's portrayal as being one of the films highlights. While many expected Alden Ehrenreich’s Han Solo to get at least one other adventure this is the first time that we've heard word of a Lando spin-off from official sources.
In an interview with Premiere France, LucasFilm president Kathleen Kennedy said "We think that the next spin-off will be dedicated to Lando Calrissian. Of course, there are still many stories to tell about Han and Chewbacca but Lando will be next."
Despite this, we don't expect this to be the next spin-off film, but we now know that it is a project that is actively being developed. IO9 spoke to LucasFilm for clarification and the studio responded that the statement wasn't correctly translated by Premiere France and while Kathleen Kennedy “said it’s something she’d like to do one day in the future" it doesn't look like it's going to be a fast-tracked project.
As we now know Alden Ehrenreich has a three-film contract - although in franchise outings multiple film bookings are commonplace and don't guarantee future work. Don't forget that Felicity Jones had a sequel clause in her contract for Rogue One despite her character's demise in that film.
There are a huge number of Star Wars projects now in development - in addition to Lando: A Star Wars Story (we made that up but it's as good a guess as any), we've got next year's Episode IX, Rian Johnson's new trilogy, more than one film being developed by D.B.Weiss and David Benioff, there's the reported Stephen Daldry Obi-wan Kenobi film and John Favreau's post Return of the Jedi TV series. We also have Pablo Hildago's pre-Force Awakens animation Star Wars: Resistance coming to Disney XD later this year.
Expect plenty of cries of 'too much Star Wars' - but if the quality keeps up we're happy.
