Joker trailer: Joaquin Phoenix puts on a happy face
Joaquin Phoenix and Robert De Niro sharing the same screen in a film about a dark and psychotic villain? Yes please (although Todd Phillips seems like a risky choice as director). Phoenix really couldn’t be better cast than the Joker and after Jared Leto’s terrible take in Suicide Squad (let’s not even get into the monstrosity created for TV show Gotham),we can only hope his incarnation meets our high expectations. As we know, he has a lot to live up to after Heath Ledger claimed the character as his own and Jack Nicholson gave us a great version under Tim Burton. Phoenix isn’t an actor who does sequels, so this is likely to be a one-and-done - a rare thing in today’s comic book-driven world. Check out the trailer for Joker above to get a first look.
The film centres around the iconic arch nemesis and is an original, standalone story not seen before on the big screen. Phillips’ exploration of Arthur Fleck (Phoenix), a man disregarded by society, is not only a gritty character study, but also a broader cautionary tale.
Directed by Todd Phillips, Joker also stars Zazie Beetz, Frances Conroy, Brett Cullen, Dante Pereira-Olson, Douglas Hodge and Josh Pais.
Joker is currently set to land in UK cinemas on October 4th.
