Is it a bird? Is it a plane?

Warner Home Video have at last announced the Region 2 retail DVD release of the first two Superman films. Both are set for release on 24 September.

Superman appears to match the Region 1 disc in every respect with a beautiful anamorphic 2.35:1 transfer and Dolby Digital 5.1 sound (I've seen some reports that the Region 1 disc is pro-logic only, but the one I have here is certainly Dolby Digital 5.1 and is sounds amazing). It also features a huge selection of extras:

  • Audio commentary by director Richard Donner and creative consultant Tom Mankiewicz
  • 10 added scenes ("Restored Scenes - jump to scenes via phantom chapters)
  • 3 special effects documentaries:
    • "The Magic Behind The Cape" - A look at the opticals, flying tests and other special effects that were created for Superman including interviews with the effects supervisor and unit director
    • "Making Superman: Filming the Legend" - A behind-the-scenes view of how it all came together including interviews with director Richar Donner, Margot Kidder, Christopher Reeve and others
    • "Taking Flight: The Development of Superman" - The trial and error to make a man fly and other filming breakthroughs. New interviews with the stars and the film's creators are included.
  • Screen tests - those who did and didn't get the pars, with a commentary by the casting director
  • 2 additional deleted scenes
  • Additional music cues
  • TV Spot, Trailers
  • Storyboard to Screen (DVD-ROM)
Superman II has also been digitally remastered and presented in anamorphic 2.35:1 widescreen and stereo sound. This disc will include the theatrical trailer.

Superman will retail for £19.99, Superman II will retail for £12.99.
