Indian Summer from Merchant Ivory

On 11th August, ‘Heat and Dust’ and ‘Bombay Talkie’ are released as the next two titles from ‘The Merchant Ivory Collection'. Both films have been digitally remastered and restored and come with a host of extra features.

Heat and Dust
With its all star cast including Julie Christie, Greta Scacchi and Shashi Kapoor, the film is based on Ruth Prawer Jhabvala’s novel. Set in India, the film tells the passionate story of an Englishwoman and her great niece who both visit India sixty years apart and are seduced not only by the men but also by the country itself. Blending east with west, the film moves effortlessly between the vibrant world of modern-day India and the magnificent splendours of the Raj. On its release in the cinemas the film was rapturously received by the public and critics alike.

Heat and Dust extras include a special promotional film about Merchant Ivory productions, scene selections and recently recorded memories and comments from Ismail Merchant, Gretta Scacchi and Nikolas Grace. It is released on 11th August, with a 15 certificate and a RRP of £19.99.

Bombay Talkie
This tragi-comic ‘bollywood’ love story stars Merchant Ivory favourites Shashi Kapoor and Jennifer Kendall. The story, set off by elaborate studio numbers, is a melodrama echoing those of Bombay’s mass audience movies. When best-selling author Lucia Lane visits India in search of some new material for her next novel she falls for handsome movie star Vikram with unexpected results. Cameraman Subrata Mitra’s ravishing photography has been likened to a brightly coloured, sumptuous sweet wrapped in gold foil.

Bombay Talkie features a special insight into the making of the film, an interview with Merchant Ivory, trailers and biographies. It is released on 11th August, with a PG certificate and a RRP of £19.99.
