"I'd Buy That For a Dollar" - Neill Blomkamp is to resurrect Robocop for another outing

Neill Blomkamp is developing a new sequel 1987's Robocop. The District 9 director is on board for, the currently titled, Robocop Returns which is set to ignore the recent 2014 remake and instead act as a sequel to the 1987 original.

Blomkamp's take on the film is based on a story developed by original Robocop writers  Ed Neumeier and Michael Miner, which is currently being taken further and updated by Justin Rhodes who has also provided the script for the Terminator film that is currently in development.

We're unsure whether this new film will ignore the events of the two earlier sequels alongside those of the remake and no details on the plot of the new film are currently available.

Robocop was original directed by Paul Verhoeven and became a huge cult classic. The two sequels that followed were of decreasing quality - Robocop 2 was a passable action film, but the third was a watered down film that ditched the 18 certificate and most of the violence that was a previous franchise trademark.

“The original definitely had a massive effect on me as a kid,” Blomkamp said. “I loved it then and it remains a classic in the end of 20th Century sci-fi catalog, with real meaning under the surface. Hopefully that is something we can get closer to in making of a sequel. That is my goal here.”
