I coulda had class. I coulda been a contender…
Another classic will be released on DVD on the 23rd of October when Columbia release a special edition of Elia Kazan’s Oscar winning 1954 movie On the Waterfront. The disc will feature the movie in its original 1.33:1 aspect ratio, English and French mono audio tracks, an audio commentary with Elia Kazan biographer Jeff Young and critic and author Richard Schnickel, a newly-produced featurette, an interview with Elia Kazan, a video photo gallery, production notes, filmographies and trailers. The disc will retail for $27.95.
Starring Marlon Brando, Karl Malden, Lee J. Cobb and Rod Steiger, On the Waterfront focuses on Terry Malloy (Brando), a washed-up prize fighter who works on the docks as an errand-boy for the mob-connected union boss Johnny Friendly (Cobb). However, after witnessing a murder, Terry must decide whether to testify against Friendly. The movie is arguably an allegory of the communist witch-hunts in the 1950s, during which director Elia Kazan infamously informed on several suspected communists.
