Honey Boy trailer: Shia LaBeouf writes and stars in a film based on his childhood

Shia LaBeouf has been his own worst enemy over the past few years, getting in trouble with the law on numerous occasions and generally making an arse of himself in public. His move away from blockbuster fare was at first ridiculed but performances in American Honey and The Peanut Butter Falcon offer reminders of his talent. Honey Boy picked up rave reviews at Sundance earlier in the year, and was also nominated for the Grand Jury Prize and collected a Special Jury Prize. It's based on his own childhood experiences and aside from being cathartic for the actor himself, could go some way to explaining why alcohol became a problem. Watch the first trailer for Honey Boy above.

From a screenplay by Shia LaBeouf, based on his own experiences, award-winning filmmaker Alma Har’el brings to life a young actor’s stormy childhood and early adult years as he struggles to reconcile with his father and deal with his mental health.

Alma Har’el (Bombay Beach) directs, with Lucas Hedges, Noah Jupe and FKA Twigs starring alongside LeBeouf.

Honey Boy opens in US cinemas on November 8 but no date has been set yet for a UK release.
