Using only original colour film – some of which has been missing for decades – Hitler in Colour tells the story of a nation at war and follows Hitler’s brutal rise to power. Critical moments such as the invasion of Poland, the Battle of Britain, and the fall of Berlin are insightfully recounted from the perspective of those who lived through them: the leaders and the people, the oppressors and the victims, the guilty and the innocent.
Hitler in Colour, tracks the dramatic transformation of Germany into a Nazi state, the inhumane treatment of Germany’s Jewish population and also takes an in-depth look at Hitler’s relationship with his mistress Eva Braun, which includes film she shot herself. Hard-hitting footage brings significant historical moments to life, replicates the visual and emotional impact of the Second World War and offers a new perspective on key moments of twentieth century history.
Viewers can watch authentic colour footage of the period’s most pivotal events, including Nazi rallies, Hitler’s meeting with Lloyd George, the horrors of Buchenwald concentration camp and Warsaw’s Jewish ghetto. Hitler in Colour also depicts wartime Germany from a civilian perspective; emotive accounts from the women and children left behind to fend for themselves add another dimension to this intriguing documentary.
Woven with contemporary witness material and original sound recordings Hitler in Colour expertly captures the wartime experiences of all of those who lived under the Führer’s rule. Combined with informative excerpts from diaries and correspondence, powerful colour footage conveys the grim reality of battle, the complexity of human emotions and the crimes and sacrifices that were made throughout the Nazi regime.
From Hitler’s election to power in 1933 to the fall of Berlin in 1945, Hitler in Colour is an innovative and timeless account of some of the most important events in history. Produced by David Batty, the Executive Producers are John Fothergill for TWI and Bill Jones for ITV1.
