Halle Bailey cast as Ariel in The Little Mermaid causing internet racists to melt down

Disney have announced that Halle Bailey - no, not Halle Berry - has been cast as the lead in their live action remake of The Little Mermaid. Inevitably the internet has gone into meltdown with hundreds of posts by racists across social media starting with "I'm not racist but..." cluttering up timelines.

The new film will be directed by Rob Marshall and will include a mix of classic songs from the original film alongside new songs written by Lin-Manuel Miranda (lyrics) and Alan Menken (music).

“After an extensive search, it was abundantly clear that Halle possesses that rare combination of spirit, heart, youth, innocence, and substance — plus a glorious singing voice — all intrinsic qualities necessary to play this iconic role,” says Marshall.

The Little Mermaid is set to enter production in early 2020.
