Funny Cow trailer: Maxine Peake knocks 'em dead in Bradford

Before the resurrection of stand-up in the 80s, the comedy world was a pretty grim place to ply your trade - especially for any female comics trying to make a name for themselves. The trailer for Funny Cow looks back at the 70s and the difficulties faced by women in the industry at the time.

Maxine Peake plays a comedian who breaks through the glass ceiling of the all-male 1970s comedy circuit to rise to stardom. Set against the backdrop of working men’s clubs in the North of England, it is both a love-letter to a bygone era and the defiant story of a woman who refuses to give up her dreams.

Adrian Shergold directs with a cast of Paddy Considine, Tony PItts, Stephen Graham and Alun Armstrong supporting Maxine Peake. Corrine Bailey Rae, John Bishop, Vic Reeves and Diane Morgan also make appearances in the film.

Funny Cow comes to UK cinemas on April 20th.
