I Was an Adventuress
A delightful crime comedy drama starring Peter Lorre, Erich von Stroheim and - in a rare big screen appearance - world-famous ballerina Vera Zorina as con artists who mingle with Europe's high society searching for victims. Posing as the fabulously glamorous Countess Tanya Vronsky, a poor young ballet dancer (Zorina) assists her two accomplices (Lorre & von Stroheim) in fleecing wealthy victims with their fake jewellery scam. Then Tanya meets the dashing young Paul Vernay (Richard Greene). At first she wants to rob him. Then she decides she wants to marry him and leave her criminal past behind her. Her accomplices agree - but only if she'll join them in one last, big swindle.
Malcolm McDowell stars as ne'er-do-well Harry Flashman in this outrageous period comedy adapted from George MacDonald Fraser’s novel. It is 19th Century Europe and Captain Harry Flashman (McDowell) is a gutless bully who seeks admission into European high society. Seeing a chance to promote their own menacing political schemes, devious Otto von Bismarck (Oliver Reed) and Rudi Von Sternberg (Alan Bates) convince Flashman to disguise himself as a Prussian nobleman so that he can marry a gorgeous duchess (Britt Ekland). However, the hoax is discovered, and Flashman flees the continent, experiencing one calamity after another – as well as some of history's most significant events – in this hilarious romp.
