First Cow trailer: Kelly Reichardt explores male friendship in old Americana

It’s been a few years since the release of Kelly Reichardt’s acclaimed drama Certain Women, and she returned at Telluride last year with First Cow picking up great reviews from critics in attendance, with many saying it works as a great companion piece to one of her earlier films, Old Joy. It’s yet another highly anticipated release from A24 who are cornering the market when it comes to auteur-led indies. They also know how to market the titles they bring on board and will be hoping to crack through into award season once again come the end of 2020. Watch the trailer for First Cow above.

A taciturn loner and skilled cook has traveled west and joined a group of fur trappers in Oregon Territory, though he only finds true connection with a Chinese immigrant also seeking his fortune; soon the two collaborate on a successful business, although its longevity is reliant upon the clandestine participation of a nearby wealthy landowner’s prized milking cow.

Reichardt wrote the screenplay based on Jonathan Raymond’s The Half Life novel, with the cast starring Alia Shawkat, Toby Jones, John Magaro, Orion Lee, Rene Auberjonois and Ewen Bremner.

First Cow opens in US cinemas on March 6, with a UK date yet to be announced.
