Fincher, Lee and Kaufman are just some of the directors releasing new films on Netflix this year

While the likes of Cannes continue to sideline Netflix, for the second year running their films look set to dominate award season and the streaming platform have just released a list of 21 new releases due to arrive in 2020.

New features by the likes of David Fincher, Spike Lee, Charlie Kaufman, Dees Rees and Ben Wheatley are all set for release this year, with the list likely to grow the further we step into 2020.

David Fincher’s Mank stars Gary Oldman as Herman J. Mankiewicz, the screenwriter of Citizen Kane, with support from the likes of Amanda Seyfried, Charles Dance and Lily Collins.

Charlie Kaufman’s I’m Thinking of Ending Things stars Jesse Plemons and Jessie Buckley and Toni Collette, while Spike Lee’s Da 5 Bloods features stars Chadwick Boseman, Paul Walter Hauser, Norm Lewis, Delroy Lindo and Jonathan Majors in a Vietnam-led war epic.

Ben Wheatley adapts Daphne du Maurier’s novel Rebecca, which was best known for its 1940 Alfred Hitchcock version, with Armie Hammer leading the likes of Lily James and Kristin Scott Thomas.

Dees Rees returns with her third feature after the Oscar-nominated Mudbound, adapting Joan Didion’s novel, The Last Thing He Wanted. Anne Hathaway, Willem Dafoe and Ben Affleck lead the cast.

Another film to look out for is The Platform. Directed by newcomer, Galder Gaztelu-Urrutia, this Spanish-language fantasy thriller picked up a lot of plaudits after debuting at TIFF last September.
