Disappointing Announcements from Warner

In an announcement that has upset many of our R1 friends, Warner have announced the release of more episodes of the TV series Friends and South Park in select “Best Of” editions. Rather than releasing TV series as entire season collections, Warner’s R1 policy seems to be to opt for these collections (although South Park was, at first, released season-by-season). Both Friends and South Park have received season-by-season releases in other DVD regions.

The Best of Friends, Volumes 3 & 4 will be released on the 20th of November, and will be available individually, as a two-disc box set or as a four-disc box set with the previous two volumes in the series. Retail will be $19.98 each, $34.98 and $69.98 respectively. Volume 3 will contain the episodes “The One with the Blackout,” “The One with the Candy Hearts,” “The One Where Ross and Rachel... You Know,” “The One with the Football” and “The One That Could Have Been, Parts 1 & 2,” while Volume 4 will contain “The One with Chandler in a Box,” “The One Hundredth,” “The One with All the Resolutions,” “The One Where Ross Got High” and “The One with the Proposal, Parts 1 & 2.” The press release claims that each episode will be digitally re-mastered and will contain never-before-seen footage, and the behind-the-scenes documentary “Friends: On the Inside,” which shows the making of an episode from start to finish, will be an extra. No picture or sound details are mentioned, but it seems reasonable to assume a full frame transfer and 2.0 surround.

South Park: Timmy! will contain episodes “Timmy 2000,” “4th Grade,” “Helen Keller: The Musical” and "The Tooth Fairy's Tats 2000,” while South Park: Winter Wonderland will contain episodes “A Very Crappy Christmas,” “Are You There God? It's Me... Jesus,” “Cartman's Silly Hate Crime 2000” and “Something You Can Do with Your Finger.” Both discs will be released on the 6th of November, containing a full frame transfer and a 2.0 surround track along with introductions for each episode. Each disc will retail at $19.98.
