Classic Australian TV miniseries come to DVD

On June 16, Roadshow Entertainment will be releasing three classic 1980s Australian TV miniseries from Kennedy Miller Productions. Employing top Australian talent both in front of the camera and behind it, these series were shown worldwide to considerable acclaim.

Bodyline (1984) depicts the English cricket tour of Australia in 1932/33 notorious for the “bodyline” technique of the visiting bowlers. Hugo Weaving and Gary Sweet star in a serial which caused considerable controversy on its first transmission..

The Dirtwater Dynasty (1988) tells the story of Richard Eastwick (Hugo Weaving) over three generations and eight decades. Born in the London slums in 1878, he arrives in Australia at the age of twenty. He marries and creates a cattle ranching empire. His enemies and two World Wars take their toll, but his determination to create his own dynasty drives him on.

The Dismissal (1983) deals with the events leading up to the dismissal of Gough Whitlam (Max Phipps) as Australian Prime Minister in 1975 and the subsequent “caretaker” parliament.

The Dismissal is released on two discs, the other two series on three. All the series are shown in their original 1.33:1 aspect ratio with Dolby Digital 2.0 sound. Given the distributor, these DVDs are very likely to be Region 4 only.

Roadshow will be releasing three more miniseries on 4 August: Bangkok Hilton, The Cowra Breakout and Vietnam.
