Breakthrough trailer: Chrissy Metz tells the story of a mother's fight for survival

Back in 2015, Joyce Smith's son fell through the ice of a Missouri lake and was given less than a day to live. Breakthrough is based on her real life experience as told in her 2017 memoir The Impossible. Chrissy Metz takes on the role of Smith, while Roxann Dawnson moves on from directing TV shows like The Americans, House of Cards, The Deuce and more. Watch the first trailer for Breakthrough above to see more about the film.

The film is based on the inspirational true story of one mother's unfaltering love in the face of impossible odds. When Joyce Smith's adopted son John falls through an icy Missouri lake, all hope seems lost. But as John lies lifeless, Joyce refuses to give up. Her steadfast belief inspires those around her to continue to pray for John's recovery, even in the face of every case history and scientific prediction.

Dawson directs, with the cast starring Josh Lucas, Topher Grace, Mike Colter, Marcel Ruiz, Sam Trammell and Dennis Haysbert.

Breakthrough opens in UK cinemas on May 17th 2019.
