Black 47 trailer: A harrowing look back at Ireland's Great Famine

The crimes of the British government during their rule of the Republic of Ireland has left a lasting effecting on the country, especially when you consider it is less than a hundred years since they gained independence. Black 47 looks back at one of the most cruellest periods of the British rule, namely the Great Famine, which lasted four years and claimed the lives of at least one million people - roughly a quarter of the country's population. The film has played at a number of festivals through the year and a release date has now been set. Take a look at the trailer for Black 47 above to see more.

It's 1847 and Ireland is in the grip of the Great Famine that has ravaged the country for two long years. Feeney, a hardened Irish Ranger who has been fighting for the British Army abroad, abandons his post to return home and reunite with his family.

He's seen more than his share of horrors, but nothing prepares him for the famine's hopeless destruction of his homeland that has brutalised his people and where there seems to be no law and order. He discovers his mother starved to death and his brother hanged by the brutal hand of the English. With little else to live for, he sets a destructive path to avenge his family.

Lance Daly directs, with the cast featuring Hugo Weaving, Jim Broadbent, Stephen Rea, James Frecheville, Freddie Fox, Barry Keoghan, Moe Dunford and Sarah Greene.

Black 47 will open in mainland Britain on September 28th 2018.
