BBC DVD in June
BBC DVD have announced their line-up for June 2006…
The BBC Sherlock Holmes Collection - £39.99 – This 6-disc set features of of the BBC’s previously released Sherlock Holmes DVD material together in one special collection, as well as the new to DVD story “The Strange Case of Sherlock Holmes & Arthur Conan Doyle”.
In 1968 the BBC produced the most popular television series ever to feature Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes, with film legend Peter Cushing donning the deerstalker, assisted by Nigel Stock as Doctor Watson. Included in this DVD collection are the following stories from this classic series:
- The Hound of the Baskervilles
- A Study in Scarlet
- The Boscombe Valley Mystery
- The Sign of Four
- The Blue Carbuncle
Also included are:
Richard Roxburugh in The Hound of the Baskervilles – First screened in 2002 this updated adaptation also includes a commentary track with director David Attwood and producer Christopher Hall, a making of documentary with cast interviews and photo gallery.
Rupert Everett in Sherlock Holmes and the Case of the Silk Stocking – First screened in 2004 this original mystery story also includes a commentary track with director Simon Cellan-Jones and producer Elinor Day.
Douglas Henshall in The Strange Case of Sherlock Holmes & Arthur Conan Doyle – First screened in 2005 this feature length film is set between 1892 and the early 1900s and explores the dark family past that drove Arthur Conan Doyle to create the world-famous detective…and then murder him.
Top Gear Winter Olympics - £15.99 – Hosted in Lillehammer, Norway Top Gear replaces athletes on skis with television presenters in cars for this event. The DVD also features additional extras including exclusive additional footage of The Stig and out-takes.
The Queen At 80 - £12.99 – To mark the 80th birthday of Queen Elizabeth II, this special documentary examines The Queen’s fascinating history, revealing her many influences and sources of inspiration. The documentary originally screened as two 60-minute programmes in April 2006 on BBC One.
Doctor Who: Inferno - £19.99 - Starring Jon Pertwee as the third Doctor, this Doctor Who adventure was first screened in 1970. As well as including all seven 25 minute episodes, this two-disc set contains a wonderful selection of special features including:
- Commentary with Nicholas Courtney, John Levene, Barry Letts and script editor Terrance Dicks
- Can you Hear the Earth Scream? (35mins approx) – Actors and production team recall working on the story in this specially shot feature
- The UNIT Family – Part One (35mins aprox) – A new feature looking at the Earthbound Doctor’s ‘family’ during his exile to Earth

High Spirits with Shirley Ghostman / My New Best Friend - £22.99 – Award-winning comedian Marc Wootton brings us this double-bill of comedy series. This 3-disc DVD release features all the episodes of ‘High Spirits with Shirley Ghostman’ and ‘My New Best Friend’ and is packed with extras including commentaries with Shirley and psychic investigator Ian, making-of featurettes, deleted scenes, animations and storyboards, photo gallery and BBC3 trails.
Cyderdelic - £12.99 – Also from comedian Marc Wootton this DVD features all 6 episodes and the original pilot.
Francesco’s Venice - £19.99 – This DVD is released to coincide with the forthcoming transmission of the new BBC series Francesco’s Italy. Francesco de Mosto, descendant of one of the oldest and most distinguished Venetian families, is an architect, historian and film-maker. He takes us on an engaging and entertaining journey through Venice’s history and the secrets and mysteries of its canals, palaces and homes.
Funland - £19.99 – Funland is a dark, comedy thriller, the brainchild of BAFTA winning writer Simon Ashdown (Eastenders) and multi-award winning League of Gentlemen co-creator, Jeremy Dyson. Set in Blackpool, Funland follows the exploits of three separate groups of people over the course of a long weekend. 55 Degrees North Series 1 & 2 - £34.99 – Starring Don Gilet and Dervla Kirwin, 55 Degrees North is an edgy, fast-paced crime drama set in Newcastle, about an ambitious detective desperate to prove himself but trapped on the tough night shift. Series 1 & 2 are released together as a special 5-disc set.
Waking the Dead Series 2 - £24.99 – Trevor Eve, Sue Johnston, Claire Goose and Wil Johnson star in the Emmy-wining crime drama in which The Cold Case squad most reopen unsolved cases and try to find the killers, using modernised methods and skills. Series 2 is released as a four-disc set.
