Antoine Fuqua and Denzel Washington in talks for The Magnificent Seven remake
Antoine Fuqua (Training Day, Olympus Has Fallen) is reportedly set to take on a new update of John Sturges’s 1960 classic western The Magnificent Seven, with Denzel Washington also tipped to co-star.
The concept itself - a remake of Akira Kurosawa’s Seven Samurai - has been of huge inspiration for more than fifty years; working its way into science fiction features like Battle Beyond the Stars, sword-and-sandal tales such as The Seven Magnificent Gladiators, and animated comedies in A Bug’s Life.
There’s no indication at the moment as to what we can expect from this treatment, but if it’s going to stick to past traditions perhaps something a little more unique might be appreciated. However, given it’s matter-of-fact title we may be looking at something hoping to stand alongside the Coens’ True Grit and Tarantino’s Django outings.
John Lee Hancock (Snow White and the Huntsman) is currently adding revisions to True Detective creator Nic Pizzolatto’s original treatment.
Fuqua’s next feature hitting the big screen is another re-imagining, in the form of The Equalizer, also starring Washington in the role formally occupied by Edward Woodward.
